Travis Washington, a Finalist of the "Show Your World" International Art Competition
Travis Washington is a visual artist whose work explores the stereotypes placed on African American males, and categorization of black artist in the fine art world. His works are heavily influenced by his culture and background from growing up confined to the inner city surroundings. Which is one of the reasons that his pieces mainly contain the “inner city Thug” figure as the main subject matter in his works. The artist uses a lot of the stereotypical imagery to make that challenge the beliefs of the viewer. Travis Washington sees his work greatly influenced by the historical genre paintings, the paintings of everyday life. He tries to give the viewer a look at everyday life from inside the confinements of inner city life from the eyes of someone who lives it personally and watching it as a viewer as well. History is often painted prettier that it actually was, Travis Washington's works are a “glimpse of reality” from the front line if you will.
